Just got a new SL2 and discovered that the IS on my lenses runs all the time when shooting live view. I have a SL1 and 6D and they don't behave like this. I knew the newer mirrorless like the M5 did this and that was one of the reasons why I decided on the SL2 over M5.

Is there any way to turn off this stupid behavior?

It´s not really that stupid, but it´s good idea to have the choice.

This is rediculous. I see no technical reason for this.

Well, stabilized liveview image???

I'm really disappointed in Canon these days.

I was like that before. There are reasons for many Canon moves you critique, and some of that will not be solved by doing the opposite. Yet, it still has some serious flaws.

I found out that these are still MINOR compared to other brands issues. You don´t see how lucky and happy owner you are with Canon.

They are so far behind every other Camera company in so many ways.

Err, not that much, not in so many. But yes, they are. But they are as well ahead of others in many ways. You make the choice. It won´t help you to be just angry.

I have always liked my SL1 and looked forward to the newer version, but now I'm not so happy.

What are the other problems?

The viewfinder on these camera has always been poor

I do agree here. Maybe size and price decisions? It´s low budged beginners camera. You cannot blame the camera. You simply need small high end camera, and Canon doesn´t do that. And it´s shame for sure.

and that is OK if the LV is a viable option.

Is it not? Is the constantly running IS making you miss some shots?

I also now have to put up with turning the back LCD on/off manually just because someone figured they could save a buck or 2 per camera by removing the eye sensor.

Yes. Shame. Still, budget camera. They do it of the price reasons.

Sorry for the rant, but after 40 years of using Canon gear I've hit the point where I'm seriously considering dumping everything.

No, it´s okay. You may not like the product, and you may not find the one you need from the particular brand. I often have this problem too, and many others with me. But it´s what it is. I got angry enaugh to jump the ship for Nikon FX, and I am back with Canon after few months. If you really want to try this route too, borrow the preferred camera for like week or two, also with lenses you want to use, and try it first. It´s way cheaper than selling your gear TWICE.

Fingers crossed, hope you find what you want.
