Nah there`s seems to be a lot of confusion in these forums with HSS, often the flash duration is far more useful than HSS.

My apologies, read somewhere on here that you wanted flash for perching birds so assumed bird feeder etc.

Interesting! Is there a way to fire the manual flash when using 1/1000+ SS?

Yes some of us have been beating max sync speeds for years using work around`s but it usually requires more just than a single flash and good old fashioned optical triggering that will not limit shutter speed and flash output compared to many wireless triggers.

No feeders... I don't have many different species around (around 9) but they hang around often and are used to have people around.

Can't stretch the budget for a full size HSS abled flash.

Overall, what would be more useful a manual full size flash or a Godox TT350o?

For the odd family snap I`d go with TTL, it just makes life easier, if you have more time or your pretty handy with manual flash I`d go with the more powerful manual flash.

Thanks.

The in camera flash and the small one that comes with the camera, have proven to enough for family gathering. I usually just use 1/250ss low + ISO and flash compensation. Worse of case I hike the ISO to 3200... Or shoot without wide open without flash.

My interest in getting the flash, other than birding and ocational portrait, is that the long manual lens I use for close-up photography casts a shadow on the subject when using small flashes.

The best solution would be getting the flash out of the shoe and away from the camera using a short ttl lead, for close up work need not always need to be big and powerful, fill shadows using light coloured board, a reflector, a 5 in 1 etc.
