Hi, I'm looking for a basic flash mostly for my E-M10 w grip, but also E-PM2. I will not have a chance to try flashes before I order.

Looking at these models: neewer TT560, Mcoplus/triopo TR950 & amazon basic flash.

Are they too big for the E-M10?

Also on eBay there's a Digital Concepts 528af flash that has TTL with older E and E-P bodies. Would it be compatible with my cameras?

Thanks

Well, you didn't tell us anything about how much flash you need, so let me speak of 3 size "scenarios". You should also tell us more about your experience. From your question, I will assume you want TTL and have little experience with flash lighting. The Laws of physics (blah, blah, blah) are still in force for size vs power on most flash units we humans can afford - the more power you need, the bigger the source of that power will be. Most companies will make units in all 3 sizes of course.

A) LARGE. For "A something that can fill large rooms/spaces. I would suggest something big and powerful; at least Olympus FL-50 (whatever their latest is) or Godox AD-series power. Yes, these are huge and awkward on an E-M10 body. IMHO best used on a stand off-camera (with a trigger on camera).

2) MEDIUM. For lighter loads, "Family shots and small-medium sized rooms", I would suggest a smaller unit. Something in the Olympus FL-600 range. These are as big as your E-M10 body, and, IMHO, still awkward, but not nearly as much so. They will still flip your camera upside down when hung over a shoulder, and can be put on a stand (with a trigger on camera) for maximum quickness and comfort when shooting.

III) SMALL. For something to always have on you for small family gatherings, social occasions, etc. Consider something in the arena of the Olympus FL-LM3. Especially useful if you shoot fast lenses. Truly surprising how tiny it is. Fully-rotating head, and it can be used to trigger a large or medium MFT-compatible remote unit (Olympus/Panasonic/some Metz/etc - MFT is pretty much non-proprietary). Cannot be used off camera (powered by the camera), but can easily fit in a pocket (not just a Dr. Who pocket).

So. How about starting with an FL-LM3 (about $80), and then adding whatever larger unit you need later ($80-600) once you've had a play with flash and determined your needs.

I use the pop-up (or FL-LM2) flash often...

I started doing some close-up work and am getting lens shadow, so I thought about getting a bigger flash. The FL-LM3 is probably too small for this too...

I also wanted the flash for perching birds, but from what I've been reading the models I'm considering are not powerful enough.

So, I'm still weighing the pros and cons of going for a medium or big flash...

Thanks.
