Latest Window 10 update has screwed up my PC.

The latest Window 10 update has changed my perfectly working PC.

It has put my work files in the dustbin / trash can (some) and Adobe Elements isn't as it was.

All my favourite web sites have been wiped from Firefox and the dam system is trying to get me to use 'Edge'

It's as if I have a clean install.

My personal used icons are no longer on the screen. I seem to have lost my work files.

What's going on?

Anybody have similar issues?

So files are in the 'User' dossier, but all my shortcuts have disappeared.

If the idea of an update is to improve the running of the pc, then it clearly isn't the case.

Time now has to be spent trying to put back things as they were...........And I have no more patience left.

Due to some glitch, your user profile was misplaced and you landed in a new, blank profile. Your old profile data is likely still available.

Here is a MS Answers thread with a likely simple solution:

Basically create a new profile, copy all the files from your old profile folder into it, and then log into the new profile. Most of your settings and data should be restored.

All my settings after the update went to Metro. After a bit of searching around I found my old desktop icons were still there when I turned the tablet mode OFF and clicked on the start button to refresh the screen.

Thank you for your comments, but my profile wasn't affected. I am still me on both computers.

This really gets to me. Here is a company worth billions, issuing free updates and screwing up the interface on two pcs that were working perfectly before. It isn't me!

I have had updates before with no problems. This latest edition did take sometime to install. But when I turned the machines on and saw that my personal icons were no longer in place and that one machine was asking me for a registration code if I wanted to use the autoclean function.......wel then I knew that something serious had been messed up.

I have just clicked on my Luminar Icon and I'm told that I am still in trial mode and would I like to buy the app. I did that several weeks ago and entered the licence code etc then!

Don't have time for all this merde! :-(((

Your profile was very likely affected, that is why you are missing profile settings. (User specific registry like your application licenses, etc)

See if there is a Windows.Old folder that corresponds to the time of the failure, and look for the user settings there.

If so, your best bet might be to roll back to the previous state using the Settings / Updates / Recovery options.

Pretty sure it is you.
Ignorant comments like that deserve to remain where they come from...............

I had two computers both running the latest Windows 10 versions. Various programmes installed. No problems.

Three days ago have information on the screen that Windows is going to update itself on both computers.

Let the system update installation run.

Result. An interface that isn't my previous interface, inspite of the fact that I'm still connecting under the same user name.

I'm asked to enter a reg number if I want to use Windows autoclean.

Icons that are on the screen act as if they have never been used before.

My PDF programme no longer knows my scanner and many other discrepancies.

So 'how is it me' if all was done automatically?

If you had no problem, then fine, as I have had no previous problems. (Moving from Windows 8 to 10 with the free transfer was easier)

Going to try and revert back, even if MS says it isn't recommended.

Thank you to the people who have offered some helpful advice.

600 million other users do not have the same problem.
Those of us who have problems after Windows updates don't give a hoot about the six million users, assuming your numbers are correct and you know with certainty that they are not having problems. Sure there are people who don't have problems (yet) but there is something wrong when a computer is running smoothly then an update comes along and messes things up. Don't blame it on us. I have a computer that's still on warranty, only have two programs installed on it plus Acrobat. The only settings changes I make are to shut off the blasted Cortona and other settings related to Microsoft's invasion of my privacy.

As you know, I've been following your problems for quite a while now and I sympathize with your frustration. But bear in mind that you have only one Windows 10 computer, and even yet are not sure if it has hardware problems or not--hence its trips back to Dell for service.

If Windows 10 was inherently flawed, surely one of our six Windows 10 PCs would be affected, but they're all working fine. I was using the 2011 Dell Vostro last night; no problem. Dell didn't even suggest Windows 10 on this older machine, yet it accepted the original release and every feature update since without a glitch.

I have a desktop (mac pro boot camp) & 3 laptops (2 Lenovos & 1 Fujitsu) running win10 pro. All with latest updates & non has any of your problems listed. Other than the annoying hello welcome screen after major updates, all shortcuts & icons & preferences are intact.

I suspect you have some software or privacy settings (includes registry tweaks) that is interfering or conflict with the updates that caused the screw ups.

You're absolutely right Austinian. I apologize for letting my frustration edge through.

I checked the repair status online this morning and, though Dell techs are actively working on it now, the system repair had been "delayed due to part availability." Emphasis mine.

That's excellent! This implies that this time they've found a hardware problem.

You might actually get a fixed PC back.

Best of luck.

Enter a reg number? Do you have some sort of 3rd party disk utility running during the update process?
I suspect that third-party system utilities are responsible for a large number of Windows issues; from the recent patches requiring an antivirus registry key setting to certify compatibility and avoid BSODs, we know the potential for problems is there.

I think "might" is the operative word.
On the first trip to Dell, they claimed, "we already replaced the parts that need to be replaced like the heatsink and the fan. "

I'd forgotten that. :-(

Ah, well, we can still hope for the best.

Nauru? That is where Archer66's profile claims they live.

If it's any help to you, which it probably is not, my wife complains of UI changes (less severe than yours) and loses her Dorico license every time there is a major Windows update.
