Having owned a Nikon, I owned a lens with this exact focal range. I got it around 2001 and have only used it twice, and have since gotten rid of it. It's a long a bulky lens, probably great for that Savannah Africa trip, and most likely will not be used for other trips because of its weight. I guess it's also good for taking photos of Little Johnny on the field. But I don't have kids.

Perfect for whale watching, on a boat, typically 300-500 feet away. Fills the frame with sharp images. But it’s what I bought it for, and I do that quite a bit.
