Thor’s Helmet ( NGC 2359 ) - A “true colour” HDR image

Thor’s Helmet ( NGC 2359 )

This image of the Thor’s Helmet ( NGC 2359 ) was taken with an unmodified Nikon D5300 and was colour balanced using daylight RBG multipliers with the aim of producing a “true colour” image.

116 x 4 min images ( ISO 250 ) were combined with shorter exposures to produce an HDR image with the aim of capturing as much of the faint detail in the nebula whilst at the same time trying to show the “true colour” of the stars ( without any blown highlights ).

Full details of the image and capture can be found here .

(  The residual ‘red’ in the background is I believe ‘normal’; that is, other images show that Thor’s Helmet is surrounded by clouds of dust and gas that appear red in those long exposure photographs. )

Nikon D5300
