some things just die...

it's the way it is.. articles and books and entire industries have been built about it.

the one thing I can guarantee is that there is zero correlation between what happened and any future purchase you will make.. i.e. Your past is not your future

i have two examples .. a cool pix camera that failed after 13 months, with less than 200 actuations.. Nikon wanted huge money to fix what was not a great camera, so I bailed..and never bought another Nikon...

a toshiba tv that died 2 days after the warranty expired.. I asked if there was any reason why I should buy another toshiba and was repeatedly told the warranty was expired..lol, not an answer to my question..

so, while both canon and Olympus have been flawless for me over 30 years, I have no expectations that I will be immune from an infant mortality device, or an early failure..it simply just happens.

the reality is that it's a fair price for a service to your ep5....manufacturers largely quote same fixed price regardless of perceived problem and note it's cheaper than a used ep5 unless you get lucky.. and you will be left with a far better camera than epl8 due to the better controls and ergonomics..
