Looking for suggestions on Peru

Dear world travelers,

My family and I will be in Lima Peru in November. We have some commitments in Lima, but hope to tack on an extra week as a family vacation. We do not plan to rent a vehicle, so any traveling would be via taxi, bus, or train. Our first thought was Machu Picchu, but after a little research it seems like quite an ordeal to get there (and back). On top of that it seems photography would be a challenge as they won't let you use anything percieved as a 'professional camera', so I doubt my D610 would be allowed. If anyone has experience with this or could shed some light on it I would really appreciate it. Best way to get there, cost, photography, is it worth it, etc.

I'm also looking for any other suggestions that might be closer to Lima. I am interested in landscape photography, mountains, waterfalls, etc. as well as birds and wildlife. We will have my wife's parents with us and while they are generally in good health, we'd like to limit the amount of hiking. A mile or two round trip is probably fine, for example, but no all day hikes.

Finally, this is our first trip outside the US, so we are totally inexperienced. We are excited, but also a little apprehensive. Fortunately we have several months to plan and get ready. Thanks for any tips or suggestions you may offer.
