Contrast DE-crease and Gray

Hi

This is a question about DE-creasing contrast in pictures that came out too contrasty (I know, I know, this should have been done in camera).

Are there better/smarter ways to decrease contrast than the basic LR and PS sliders?

I am noticing that anything more than gentle changes leads to the image "graying out", where there is a strong loss of color and even texture/detail. Doing Luminosity blend on that image still leaves the image very "unpleasant and unsatisfying".

I suppose another way of putting it is "how do I simulate  in LR/PS the use of good fill light, when none was used but was needed to decrease the contrast at the time of shooting"? Moving the Fill slider and similar adjustments in LR leads to a different look, almost as if now there are two separate lights of different character, one for highlights and one for shadows with the resultant image having a jarring artificial quality.

Thank you.
