Are small sensors still relevant?

I believe it's a mistake to overlook the advantage of the small sensor cameras.  If you backpack a lot or ride a bicycle but still want something with reach, what could be more handy?  There's no need to carry extra lenses.  With Lloydy's recent posts, I've been looking through some old stuff.  This shot is of an Oregon Coast sunset.

There's a sand bar on this side of that largest rock that often has hundreds of Sea Lions resting there.  Here's a shot of that sand bar during the day time, from the same location.  A relatively small camera with a small sensor that allows a convenient 1200mm shot?  I state my case.

These were taken hand held.  The excellent "image stabilization" allows full zoom shots with no tripod!  I LOVE MY FUJI
