D5500 no AF when single point mode is off-center

I've always had difficulties with the autofocus on my D5500 when in darker situations and in single point focus mode. Often the camera refuses to focus and the focus assist doesn't operate. I just discovered that this happens whenever the single focus point is not in the very center of the frame. If I move it one point off the center, the AF assist beam doesn't work, I hear the focus motor operate, but it can't focus.

What's the deal with this? Is this normal? Do other Nikons and other brands do this as well?

thnx / Kozmob
