D500 and Battery Order Problems

Has anyone else run across a problem with the D500 plus vertical grip using the wrong battery first? I have a ProMaster grip attached to my D500 (recommended by the camera shop when I bought the D500). The camera is set to use the grip batt first, but is instead using the internal batt first. Here is the set of data that I collected:

Internal Batt (% charge, # of frames accredited to batt) / Grip Batt (%, # of frames)
95% (517) / 81% (0) -- Wed. AM
88% (517) / 81% (39) -- Wed. PM
82% (517) / 77% (39) -- Th. AM
58% (517) / 77% (287) -- Th. PM

97% (0) / 97% (0) -- Fri AM (recharged)
81% (0) / 97% (916) -- Sat AM

It is constantly showing the picture count for the day being assigned to the grip batt., but the actual energy used is coming from the camera internal batt.

So I changed the setting to use the internal batt first, and recharged both batts. Here is the data for usage after that:

Internal (%, # of frames) / Grip (%, # of frames)
97% (63) / 97% (0)
92% (136) / 92% (0)
74% (573) / 82% (0)
72% (610) / 80% (0)

Here again, the frame count is being assigned to the correct batt, but in this scenario the energy drain is happening to both batts -- close to equal.

I was using a Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens plus Nikon 1.4x TC III for all the shots taken during this time.
My camera shop is buffaloed.  Anyone have any idea what is going on here?
