Try this: compare what you can see with your eyes shaded, and unshaded. There's a reason baseball players don't turn their hats backwards.

I find a lens shade improves the image in almost all cases, not just to avoid flare, but to improve contrast. That's also what Art Wolfe taught me.

It's easy to test, and the results are sometimes quite surprising, in both directions. BTW, uniform veiling flare, for many scenes, is not the problem it was in the film days. Like LaCA, we have ways of dealing with it.
