Landscape lens for the Sony Alpha a7R III
1

(also posted in Camera, Lens and System Buying Advice forum but advised to post here as well)

I’m an amateur photographer.

I own the Sony Alpha a7R III paired with the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM
(Yes - Way out of my league).

My main interests are portraits/street, food and landscapes.

I’m looking for a landscape lens.
I’ve never own one and I don’t quite sure how wide should I go in terms of focal length.

I do know/think this:

  1. Wider than 12mm is crazy wide. I’d like to avoid the distortion.
  2. I find 21mm and 18mm not wide enough.
  3. I always prefer zoom over prime. I’m aware of the trade offs. I value the versatility and convenience more than I’m upset over the loss of quality.
  4. Filter thread-ability is obviously desired when it comes to landscape shooting.
  5. longer than 35mm is really not the type of landscape I normally shot.
  6. Not interested in astrophotography

So I did my research and aware of my options which are:

  1. Sony FE 12-24mm f/4 G Lens
    • Pros:
      • Good pair with my Sony camera.
      • Perfect focal range that also complete my exiting 24-70mm gear.
    • Cons:
      • No filter thread (why?) and expensive alternatives.
      • Not fast enough.
      • Most reviews I’ve seen, images look soft and distorted.
  2. Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Lens
    • Pros
      • Good pair with my Sony camera.
      • One of the sharpest Sony lenses.
      • 82mm filter thread which matches my existing filters I have for my 24-70mm lens
    • Cons:
      • Crazy expensive.
      • Focal length overlap with my 24-70mm.
      • 16mm is not wide as I’d like (which is debatable)
  3. Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens
    • Pros
      • Good pair with my Sony camera.
      • Much more affordable than the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8.
      • 72mm filter thread (already own 3 72mm filters)
    • Cons:
      • Crazy expensive.
      • Focal length overlap with my 24-70mm.
      • 16mm is not wide as I’d like (which is debatable)
      • not the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8
  4. Sigma 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF
    • Pros
    • Cons
      • Just don’t see the advantages over the Sony 12-24mm.
      • No filter thread.
      • Not fast enough.
  5. Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens
    • Pros:
      • Great price.
      • Decent quality.
      • Distortion control.
      • Plenty fast.
      • 72mm filter thread (already own 3 72mm filters)
    • Cons
      • No AF.
      • Fixed length.
      • Not Sony.
  6. Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 or Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5
    • Pros:
      • Decent price.
      • Decent quality.
    • Cons:
      • No AF.
      • Fixed length.
      • No filter thread.
      • Not Sony.

Seems like my best bet is the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens.

My perfect lens would have been the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM but just a bit wider.

What do you think? Any other options? Even in the near future?

If I had to define a template photo I normally take and interested in taking is this one:

16mm APS-C (24mm FF)
