Lens flaws and more megapixels?

I've noticed with a prime and kit lens using a 16mp camera that images are not as good as on an older 12mp camera. These are the same lenses on the same mft system.

Obviously, more megapixels means bigger enlargements but I did not realize they would show flaws in the lenses to this extent. The 14mm prime went from being a stellar lens to a mediocre one on the 16mp camera and the kit lens is noticeably softer on the edges.

I'm wondering if it's down to the difference in enlargement size or if there could be any other factors. The lenses are old and may not have been designed for larger megapixel camera's despite them now being available on the same mounts.

In the Sony forums, I've also read a few posts mentioning something similar about certain kit lenses being much worse when paired with newer bodies.
