distance scale On the 30 mm

People, maybe this is one of these stupid questions but I am stuck..

On my 30 mm, there is a nice distance scale. But I only know the old Hyperfocal method of the old manual lenses. With all the aperture and distances. Like on the Zeiss lenses.

With other words, I do not understand the distance scale on my lens!

Am I missing the obvious? Is what I am seeing only the step with the f1,4? That would make sense to me but then, why not with the other apertures as well? Is that because there is no aperturering on these lenses? Still, I would like to know how to manually get my camera in focus for streetphotography on the spot. Without AF.

So again, with older lenses, especially the MF ones, I know how to zone foces. But can I still do that on a SD1 with a 30 mm art lens?

As always, help is apreciated.
