Perspex disc around telephoto lens - What is it?

My daughter was watching the ice skating championships on the telly today and noticed a photographer who had a clear perspex disc around the end of his lens. She had never seen such a thing before and wondered what it was. Now, I didn't actually see it, but she described it as a flat or nearly flat disc, a bit like a satellite dish, but completely clear.

I tried Googling it but to no avail. Any ideas??
