BIF - How can I "ignore" the background?

Photography of wildlife is somewhat of a casual/semi-serious hobby for me, and recently I became the proud new owner of a Panasonic Lumix FZ300. Thus I’m still exploring all the bells, whistles, settings, and features of this particular camera, after having owned several of its predecessors from the same manufacturer.

I was wondering specifically about a certain scenario… I was out shooting bald eagles [With the camera; otherwise that could probably get me thrown in jail] – often in flight – and was wondering if anyone could recommend any specific settings for such a situation.

What I notice in these and many of my shots [using full Auto mode] is that the camera is probably attempting to focus on the entire scene, when it was just the bird that I cared about; the background may as well not even be in the photo, for all I care.

Once I arrived home and downloaded the pics to display on a monitor, it occurred to me that it likely would have been helpful to A) use single-point focus; and B) disable Digital Zoom (which was probably giving me a false sense of how far I’m able to zoom in and still get an image of semi-decent quality).

Any and all comments or further suggestions for this type of shooting would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
