saving PSD files with "compression on" setting in PS

When savings PSD files in Photoshop, apparently by default there is an option to compress them. Is there any data/image Quality loss by doing this or does it work much like lossless compression on RAW files that some cameras do?

I've been saving as TIFF for a while, but wanted to start saving disk space (as I work primarily off a 2TB HDD that's getting full with edited photos) so I was thinking of going back to savings as PSD. I switched for max compatability with non-Adobe products, but since most of my work is within the Adobe ecosystem, I don't think TIFF compatability matters much as most (if not all) Adobe apps support the PSD format.
