Manfrotto Super Clamp -- is the stud supposed to rotate?

I have one of these and a month ago I hooked a Manfrotto 454 macro rails up to it. When screwing the rails on to the stud, it at first didn't line up correctly to have the rails pointing straight up/down.  But I swear that I pressed the button on the side and rotated the stud and got it to align like I wanted.  In fact I used it that way for most of the month and it seemed solid.

Then this weekend I took it apart and tried to put it back together.  Again it didn't screw on to the right position, but when I tried to rotate the stud, it appears impossible.  Even looking inside the mechanism I don't see how it would work.  Pressing the side button allows me to take the stud out and put it back, but not rotate it.  So I'm baffled at how I did it the first time!

I'm a mechanical clutz for sure.....

If it's a *Single* Lens Reflex, why do I need so many lenses?
