How to achieve white background for a baby sitting?

I know the standard way to get a white background is just to have a white paper backdrop on a couple of stands but for a baby that is sitting, essentially he will be sitting right in front of the curved paper. How do I ensure that the curve is not visible?

If I put a flash behind in pointing at the paper, I find that the lighting is not even (bright at the bottom and fade out at the top). And if I blast the flash behind him, I risk overexposing the whole thing, sometimes even spilling it back to the subject.

What's a good even way to get a white background for a baby sitting?
