Thanks, guys.  The only alternative I have above 55mm is the 100-400, so I'll probably have to live with that.  I will likely not attach the TC, since it appears that we'll get pretty close to the whales.  Ideally, I'd have a second body with a 16-55 attached for very closeup shots, but I don't think that's an alternative right now and not sure I'm inclined to rent a 50-140 or second body just for that one trip.  I think the 16-55 pretty well destroyed my remaining equipment budget for a good while.  This trip will be the first good shakeout that lens will get.
