My 7D broke a pin off the CF reader when I was changing out the card. Looked and thought it was going to cost an arm and a leg to fix it. I looked at the pins on the card slot and saw broken pin. I thought long and hard and thought about a simple free fix. Here is what I did:
1. Figure out which pin is bent/broken.
2. Take a staple for an office stapler and insert it into the corresponding hole on the CF card. This can be tricky as the staple will go deeper than it has to and could short out the CF card.
3. Cut off the staple so only about 1/8" is sticking out. (if the staple is the correct size it will stay in the hole without falling out).
4. Carefully instert the CF card and seat it. If you feel any pressure, remove and cut the staple shorter.
If all goes well the camera will boot up and read the CF card as usual. It worked for me with some playing around with the length of the staple. My 7D is fully functional again and I use the USB slot to download pictures from the card.
I hope this helps others with this problem.
Engineering minds...glad you had success with this fix.
