Nikon D90 and Metz 52 flash metering inconsistency

Hi, I wonder if someone already came across a similar problem: I did some focus stacking with my D90, using a Metz 52 as a slave flash. Manual metering, flash set to Rear mode and TTL. Now the strange thing is: Every second shot is about 1 stop brighter. No. 3 is the same like no. 1, no. 4 is brighter, and so on. No exposure bracketing is set on the camera. Time between two shots is about the same, so the flash has suffcient time to reload. Any ideas? I checked all camera and flash settings at least twice. Hey, I know that most problems are sitting behind the camera, but .... 😉
