Nikon 300 mm f4 PF jittery image

I have owned a 300mm f4 PF Nikon for the past 12 months (bought used from my dealer).

It is sharp and light, and ideal for birds in flight and wildlife handholding.

On my past trip to Kruger Park, I noticed something weird...

Press the shutter lightly to activat AF, and suddenly the image in the viewfinder jumps radically up an down a few times...

I switched VR off, and the same happened again!

It stopped doing this after about 10 different similar experiences...

NOT the same object photographed, but a variety of subjects in nature.

No problem with sharpness of pictures....

Just very disconcerting.

Any ideas?

Thanks and God bless,

Friedrich von Hörsten, South Africa.

Ps. I love using this lens with my D7200 (+ 1.4 tc ii sometimes).
