In the video tutorial I linked earlier, Caleb seems to be into the cinematic look. I suspect, in his eyes, "pop and punch" would equate with the output of a cheap consumer camcorder with too much color and contrast.

I think Caleb may also be into color grading in post, where a less saturated picture would allow one more leeway. I did see in the linked review that the G7's colors might be a little undersaturated. That may be why the G7 includes the "vivid" picture profile as an option.

If one wants to avoid post processing, perhaps one could put a few pictures on the memory card that have the desired "look" one wishes to emulate, and then compare those shots with the footage one is shooting in the field and adjust accordingly.
