A bit of background, I have a Canon DSLR and its share of heavy lenses and was looking for a walk around camera without loosing too much quality.
I also own a Sony a6500, which should have filled the bill, but luminous lenses aren’t part of Sony APS-C lenses lineup, and third party lenses are big.
I bought the Canon M100 without the kit lens but with the Canon EF-M 22 f2. It’s roughly a 35mm equivalent, which suits my needs.
I was expecting a luckwarm experience, as the m100 is aimed at beginners, and I was concerned I would fiddle with endless unecessary fancy functions (blur background, backlit scene, etc).
The beginners functions are definitely here and produce surprisingly good results. They are mostly predefined settings and post treatment processing, like HDR for backlit scene or fast aperture for portraits, and so on.
But, it’s still possible to use the camera like any other, with manual, aperture or speed priority.
What impressed me the most was the AF. I’m using a 5DS, whose AF is something between the 5d mk3 and mk4, nothing impressive, specially for moving subjects. On the a6500, the eye AF was my favorite one. But on the m100, you just touch the screen (eye or mouth, even a cat’s eye) and if servio is set, the m100 does its best to track your previously chosen focal subject. And it does quite a good job!
With the luminous 22mm, it’s a joy to use! And incredibly fun! Just letting the camera in full automatic is also relaxing, given the results.
There are some drawbacks, though, worth noting.
Noise past 1600 iso high and you’ll see it if shooting raw. In jpg, the canon’s settings are agressive, really. Strong noise reduction and sharpening.
The AF in low light is also not that good, don’t expect miracles, here.
It’s also surprisingly « heavy » for its size. Nothing compared to a dslr, but worth noting.
