GH5 tempts simply because it's future proof, if I did decide to go pro and make money from my gear. Hmmm....

With 8k and 36MP just waiting around the corner?

Don't fool yourself, you just want this state of the art instrument right now. This is just normal GAS, wait a few months and it will go by.

Who says "8K and 36MP just waiting around the corner"?

That's nonsense in my eyes. We are at least 3 - 5 years from that.
Most people don't even have 4k computer screens or TVs yet.

You'll be surprised. The Tokyo Olympics in 2020 are being broadcast in 8K, LG have shown a huge 80" 8K OLED TV and Dell have released an 8K monitor. It will be the first resolution that almost matches the human eye in dot pitch so that when viewing those lovely 20MP stills or 8K videos on a large screen, it will be pretty much like staring at a large glossy print. To think that 3 years ago, I had a Galaxy Note4 that shot outstanding 4K video, but to predict such an advance a year or two before that would have sounded silly.

It would not surprise me if the GH6 is 8K and Sony launch an 8K ready A7 iV next year (2019). Canon will probably launch a professional 8K camera, separate to their DSLR line that seems to focus on stills. hence the flawed 4K implementation in the 5D Mk iV.

Prosumers and video editors will drive all this - if they know what they are shooting is going to be future proof, they'll invest now. I count myself in that group, because it will be nice to view footage of family, landscapes etc in 5 years from now on an 8K TV or monitor that I shot soon as it was affordable to shoot at that res.

I won't mention 16K.

When I wrote 8K and 36MP were just waiting around the corner, it was meant as ironic exaggeration. All I wanted to say is, that NO, better: NOconsumer electronic device is "future proof", if future means more than 1 year. Or would you buy your son a computer and expect him to use it for 20 years, until your grandson will inherit it? Sorry, another ironic exaggeration.

And of course, I didn't expect, my exaggeration was as realistic as that.
