I'm having a problem getting the proper "S" base curve applied to Darktable conversions, resulting in more highlight clipping than I want. The out-of-camera JPEG has a superior tone curve. I'm thinking certain film simulations, such as Provia or Pro Neg Std, might help as a starting point.

I'd assume that a proper simulation darktable style expects a linear base curve because that's the common denominator. It should build colour and tonal transforms from scratch.

Exactly. These styles modify the tone curve and the color lut module. Additionally, you may have to compensate exposure manually.

For a general-purpose base curve which imitates the tonality of the OOC jpeg, see these |two tutorials by Harry Durgin (around 35 minutes altogether).
