if you are most interested in advanced features and a more sophisticated autofocus system, you should probably go with the 7ti. I wasn't all that interested in crop sensor cameras but kept looking for a good point and shoot that would allow me to get sharp photos of birds from a kayak. After trying out quite a few, I decided I would never be satisfied with point and shoots with a long enough range so I thought I might try the sl1 with a zoom lens (70-300, non-l, usm II). I couldn't believe how great the images were. I liked it so much, i got the sl2 when it came out for greater resolution, though I never had many complaints with the sl1 (again truly surprised about how good the iq was in shooting conditions that were almost always pretty bad). The sl2 is even better in multiple ways than the sl1. I would guess that the 7ti is better. However, I was sold on the sl2 because of its very small size, its ease of use -- you don't want to mess with a lot of menus when you are trying to get a shot from a moving boat, etc. I have also used it as a convenient small and light weight camera that can fit in a purse (with a smaller lens)--I have made good use of the 10-18 stm and the 18-135 stm in using the sl2 as a travel camera.

In short, there are some very good reasons why the 7ti is a better camera, but it is hard to beat the sl2 for quality in a very small, light body. I keep finding more uses for it all the time, although I will add that I mostly shoot full frame.
