As a counter example I would suggest binocular fusion. It only exists in ones head. But it is easy to detect people with dysfunctions of binocular fusion by performance tests involving assembly of objects or movement through spaces.

This is not a counter example to the belief in 3dPop. It is an illustration of what can be measured vs something that cannot. One is an effect of how the brain blends two different images as part of its normal function vs the way some people subjectively interpret a single image.
