Actually that is not true because our eyes produce a DOF that's very shallow. If you don't believe me hold a finger in front of you about a foot from your face and an inch from your computer screen, focus on it and, while maintaining focus on your finger you will see the text on the screen is out of focus. Repeat this at any distance. Because your eyes focus so quickly, faster than any lens, it gives the illusion of deep DOF.
