I've from time to time said comparisons that are blinded to technique and gear are the only way to really understand what makes images pleasing.

It wouldn't need a lot of money, any of us could collaborate and post the images on Flickr and count "likes".  All we'd need to do is strip the EXIF data before posting and keep a record of the lenses used.

On another thread I posted (mainly to fill in time between arguing about protective filters, weather resistance, bokeh, RAW vs JPG and of course Ken Rockwell) a good scientific digest of the factors that produce the illusion of depth, all were plausible, understandable and didn't need to adduce arcane ideas about lens design.
