I don't know if the 100-400 II is better with the 1.4x III than the Sigma or not as I haven't done a side by side on a 5d mk3 but I have tried the Canon setup on a 5d mk3 and found that you only get AF with the center AF point and it works ok for static subjects in good lighting but it struggles a lot in less than ideal lighting and I had a hard time tracking action with it. My guess is that AF performance will be better with the Sigma though I don't think either option would be great for sports photography in lower light conditions.

I have found several reviews that argue that the 100-400 II is better than the Sigma. I will be using it more for the 200-400 range for sports (that will get the other parts of the field I have been missing with my 70-200), and the extra light on the wide end was very appealing to me.  I did order the 1.4III TC for the extra reach when trying to shoot wildlife (knowing I will be stuck with the center points on AF).

The thing is, I just can't afford the BEST option for lower light conditions outside - one of those lenses over 300mm with F/4 and up. So - I will have to make do for now. But one day!!
