For what its worth, I have researched & read & studied & reviewed a few dozen reports and threads and articles and reviews about this lens in comparison to others (such as the Sigma 150-600). The Sigma was my first choice, based on primarily cost, being its ~1/2 cost of this Canon, and has (by many accounts) very good - excellent IQ and AF, plus ~200mm more reach.
The lens would be attached to my 6D2 or 70D, for sporting events, outdoor/nature, and birds & other critters-of-interest-that-are-too-skittish-to-get-too-close-to... So, gist of the story is that tonight about an hour ago I confirmed an order with TriState Camera for the Canon 100-400 II, at what I believe is decent price of $1738.
I've a hard time justifying this price,,, especially when thinking I also really need to be spending that hard-earned-cash on other items (such as an AWD vehicle, such as a Subaru Outback), and since this photography gear is "just" a hobby. But then I figure what the hades, its Christmas time, and my bday is in a few days (31st, yes,,, that day when the entire world celebrates my arrival into the world), and the kids don't need any inheritance money just quite yet.
PS: the post by Marco Nero within this thread https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4088485 is what really helped sell (or seal) the deal for me... great persuasive words to tune me to the Canon 100-400 II... thanks Marco

Wow! Great in-depth analysis by Marco Nero. Thanks for sharing that! Since I just gave in and ordered the 100-400 II and the 1.4 III extender, it is encouraging to read.
You did get a little better deal than I did, but I try to stick with B and H or Adorama for new purchases because I feel good with them, but I need to investigate some of the other places as well. (After this purchase, that may be a long while, haha). Got the extender since it was on the rebate list, so the rebates pay for half of that - had to get both for the rebates.
I know what you mean about having a hard time justifying the expense!! I almost had a guilt meltdown after I ordered it, even with my husband encouraging me to get it. Even though I am making some money with youth sports and family photography, that was a nice chunk of my bank account. But, I am excited anyway!
By the way - Happy Birthday!!
