Just give me an SX60 with a 50x zoom, Digic 7, and squeeze in a 1" sensor. Thanks.
It will be interesting how they squeeze in the optics. It will be a G3X with double the focal length at full stretch. The aperture if it is say a rather slow f6.3 would still be a hefty 7 cms at the 440mm required. The RX10 IV is 5.5 cms if you want to see how big a lens gets at these apertures and that is f4 at 220mm focal length.
A revival of the 1/1.7" sensor could produce an interesting camera though.
I really don't do lens design but I know what I want and I know Canon can do it. If the sensor must be 1/1.7" I will accept that. Small sensors are getting better with the cell phone market driving progress so even the best 1/2.5 sensor will do if really pressed. Just give me what I want and at a super good price. Not asking for much.
The manufacturers are so focused on cutting costs that I can't imagine any new "non-standard" sensors anytime soon. Its all about sharing parts not just across models, but across brands. They will likely be sticking to 1/2.3, 1", and aps-c for the foreseeable future. That's why Canon sacked the 1.5" sensor. Even m4/3 with its multiple brands struggles to keep up, which is why you see very long sensor lifespans in their system- Olympus has been using practically the same 16mp sensor since 2012, because they need to suck every last bit they can out of each cycle to cover the development costs.
The 1/2.3" sensors seem to be all 18 or 20mp sensors, presumably Sony issue, so expect continued sub smartphone quality as the phone makers have sensibly avoided emphasis on pixel counts which has helped keep resolution and low light performance up. The camera industry helped sow the seeds of its own destruction when it it persuaded users they needed more pixels.
