Sorry to disagree but you should do some more research and make your own conclusions. Check out the digital picture for direct comparisons. Scan the web for photos with the respective lenses. FWIW Art Morris loves the 100-400 with TC's for his images and it allows for hand holding. Personally, I can't advocate for the Sigma - it's build quality is iffy, and it just doesn't AF/track well with the 5d series especially in anything other than perfect light. The 100-400 II with a Canon 1.4x III TC at f/8 AF much better than my Sigma 150-600 ever did. But again, don't take my word for it.
Thank you Adam2 for the comments. I just spent quite a bit of time exploring Art Morris' blog and was impressed with the photos he gets with the 100-400M2 and the 1.4. Of course, I don't have the same camera he uses, but I did have my camera both times rented the 100-400M2. I do believe I am about to just go order that combo.
What camera do you use them on, and have you done any sports in lower light? Just curious how it handled it. I generally would not need the extender for that.
Thanks again!
So, I'm blessed and more recently have/had a 5dmkiii, 1dmkiv, 1dx, 7dmkii at various times and the Sigma 150-600, Canon 100-400 IS II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 is, Canon 300 f/2.8 II,Canon 300 f/4, Canon 400 f/2.8 is, Canon 600 f/4 various TC's, etc..
When I was doing outdoor sports I used the 70-200, 300, & 400 depending on the sport and location. The 300 f/4 didn't cut it with respect to AF but that was years ago with the old lens design and older bodies. The 400 f/2.8 was sold years ago as that work faded, I was no longer making $ in photography and transitioned to shooting more wildlife.
Because of budget issues, I tried various solutions the 400 f/5.6 (too short, old design, no is), the 150-600 sigma (listed the problems), the 100-400 IS II and eventually my long 600 f/4. The 100-400 is a nice all around lens and can do wildlife quite well, though it's short on the long end. It can function with a TC though on the 5dmkiii only the center point works. The 5dmkiv is much superior and all AF points work with f/8. Of all of my lenses it has the most utility and is highly functional on the 5dmkiv. Those who rail against TC's don't shoot wildlife. Again, do your home work and decide for yourself.
