Still on the fence about 14-150+17/1.8 "travel kit" deal

The $799 US 14-150 + 17/1.8 with hoods and cases deal is a good one, but I'm still on the fence, partly because I don't think I can leave the 12-40 behind that easily, so the 14-140 might just gather dust. I have the kit sitting in my cart, where it can be shipped to Arizona for arrival when I'm there next week... but I have other things I could spend the $1000 CDN on, like a furnace for our Westfalia... lenses don't keep me very warm.

While I pondered this decision, I decided to compare the 14-42IIR kit lens, which I have never used, with the 12-32 which replaced it. A few shots out the back door, with a snowy scene showing both distant tree branches against sky, and pergola timbers at the frame edges, was suitable for gauging the IQ differences at f4, 5.6, 8, and 12,14,17,25,32,42mm, along with a few token close up shots for bokeh wide open.

The results: the 14-42IIR is *very* mediocre, although it does manage to beat the 12-32 in the centre (slightly) at a few specific settings. But in the corners, the sharpness ranges from fair to awful, while the 12-32 ranges from good to fair, but mostly good. About the only area that the 14-42 does better is with CA, where it is typically about 1/2 the amount of the 12-32, and in close focussing, where it does a little better, and is less likely to give up finding focus. Oh, and it beats the 12-32 handily from 33-42mm.

I kept this lens thinking I might have a use for it someday, maybe for my daughter, but I think it needs to go on eBay now. I don't have anyone I dislike enough to pass this on to.
