How to connect your Canon M3, M5, M6 or Rebel camera with WIFI to your Windows computer
Dec 24, 2017
Below I will present two solutions to transfer your JPG’s via WIFI to your Windows computer but let me first say something about Canon.
Their cameras make beautiful pictures but their workflow support is awful for the cameras mentioned above.
According to Cannon you should send your pictures to your phone with the Canon Connect app.
Well why should I do this ?
If I want pictures on my phone I make pictures with my phone !
I do not buy a camera for € 1300 to send pictures to my phone but to send pictures to my computer and process them with Lightroom and then distribute them in the way I like.
But Canon does not like that so the killed the EOS Utillity support on these cameras.
They give you an opportunity to send your photos to the Cloud where they can have a look at them or you have to use a USB cable like the way you did ten years ago !
Canon, shame on you.
Anyhow I found two solutions for JPG’s at least because the Canon Connect app does not even support RAW files !
Solution 1.
Buy the Solid Explorer app in the Google play store.
With Solid Explorer you can make a connection to shared folders on your Windows computer.
So, you first transfer your photos with the Canon Connect app to your phone and then you transfer your photos with Solid Explorer to your Windows computer.
For this method you need some space on your phone and there are two steps involved but I prefer this solution.
Solution 2.
Install Andy (a free Android emulator) on your Windows computer (takes some time so be patient) .
Andy is running in a Virtual Box and you have to change the network settings in Virtual Box (leave adapter 1 on NAT and create a second adapter, choose Bridged Adapter and give it the name of your WIFI network).
This is necessary for the Cannon Connect app (installed via play store with Andy first) to make a connection over your WIFI network to your camera.
Now you can transfer your photos directly to you Windows computer but it takes a relative long time to move the photos from the folder in Virtual Box to a folder in Windows OS.
Both solutions are working (I tried them) but I hope than Canon will come up with a firmware update where support for the EOS utility is included.
In the mean time we have to deal with this ridiculous situation.
