At the time the EM came out, there were still many more non-AI lenses in circulation. The other Nikon SLRs of the day could mount those, the EM could not.

History repeats itself: the lower end Nikons of today can't mount many older lenses while the high end bodies can. The marketing rationale is the same, pros owning lots of legacy glass are not the target buyer.
