Even in the film days, people were shocked when Nikon introduced the entry-level fully auto (with no manual override) plastic bodied EM and the E series of cheaper lenses for it...many older Nikon lenses could not even be mounted!

My wife had a Nikon EM and we gave it to my daughter as her first camera for a photography class she took in school. It took pretty good pictures and was light and very portable. I still have a film FE which works like a charm, though it is mostly a show item now...
