Manual Focus - something to be scared of?

I always just point and click, with the camera working out the exposure from what I've automatically focussed on. Briefly tried manual focus the other day, handheld, so I could use any part of the scene to click on for exposure, hoping my human eye was good enough to keep everything in focus.

Some came out OK and others were less sharp and a little blurry.

To become a better photographer is manual focussing a key element and do other snappers worry about going home with blurry pictures? Or is it normally quite an easy, fool proof process?

Apologies if this is a really basic question but I've just gotten used to letting the camera do all the work!
