You are the head Nikon product strategy...
2

Nikon has some of the industry's highest performing cameras: The D850, D5, D500--even the D750 for its price point. But this doesn't always translate to building the business--especially in a competitive industry.

Here's the scenario:

While coming up with New Years resolutions, you decide to apply for a new job. Surprisingly, you get a phone call from Nikon, and you are now the head of product strategy! You respond, "I AM?" and they say "that's exactly the type of forward thinking we need here." They must have forgotten to do the background check.

Now it's up to you. What sort of camera would be your top priority to release in 2018? Also, top 5? Or any auxiliary equipment (inc. lenses) with the camera? Why?

(ie.: this isn't necessarily the camera you want. It's the camera that will provide returns, or build market share, or define your brand, or establish future, or whatever strategy you have.)

Assume:

  • You magically can design, build, test, scale production, ship, & market the cameras by calendar 2018Q1
  • The performance will be good vs. direct competitors
  • You market well enough
  • Pricing roughly +/- $300
  • You are allowed to operate at a loss this year if you want
  • These are listed roughly in order of category > price
  • (References are comparable Nikons, regardless of type)

Also, please don't take this too seriously. It shouldn't come as a surprise that this obviously isn't scientific & it's opinions. Just another end-of-the-year poll.

It always strikes me as interesting how many choices there are to make. I have no idea what the results will look like...
