Limiting to living photographers working today ... Who inspires you and why?

I have many, but I keep coming back to Doug Ljungkvist: http://www.douglasljungkvist.com

He takes the everyday and makes it extraordinary. And I love what he manages to do with overcast natural light, without depending on dramatic golden- or blue-hour lighting to create interest. He is Swedish by birth, and I feel like he brings that Nordic sensibility to his work on America.

His winter Ocean Beach series — pre- and post-hurricane — and his Middletown USA series are probably my favorites, but all his pictures tell stories, often without people. That’s impressive and very inspirational to me, since I find a lot of poignancy and power in places.
