Basic editing, Grab tool, on a Mac

My Windows 10 laptop is being repaired and I won't have it for at least two weeks. I'm using my daughter's MacBook Air and am clueless about some of its tools but need to do some graphic work.

Snipping

I use Windows snipping tool and think the Mac equivalent is Grab tool - I've found it in the Utilities folder but not sure if there is a better way to use it than I've been able to discover. Is using Command+Shift+4 or Command+Shift+3 the only way to get it to work?

Basic Editing

She has Picasa on her Mac so I'll be able to do basic editing. Or is there a better program already on the Mac? I can't find one but I may not understand the program names. I need to resize and crop.

Layers/Online Editor

I occasionally need to use layers/add text to a graphic. I use Photoshop Elements on my own computer. Is there a preferred online editor to do this with a Mac? Don't really want to buy a program for just two weeks use.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
