Building strength for handholding

Until today, my heaviest lens was my Canon 100 mm 2.8L. My 100-400 mk ii just arrived and it is weighty, right around 3 lbs. I knew the specs but I didn't realize just how big an increase it was going to be. My question is this: how do you suggest I build strength so that I can use this lens handheld comfortably? Simply using it would be one way, but I'd love other suggestions. I can try my monopod but that's not my first choice.

While we're on the subject, would a heavier camera body better counterbalance the lens and make holding them more comfortable? I have it on my 60d. I've read things to this effect but wasn't sure if it'd make a significant difference.

Thanks for any help.
