Sigma 50 Art the most unreliable lens I have ever owned
2

Well after 2 days testing my Sigma 50 1.4 ART will be returned tomorrow. The instability of autofocus on a Canon 5D MKIV and a Canon 5D MK III is just unbelievable. Sharpness is great, it is silent, heavy but not a problem if you get such sharpness from wide open till f11. But autofocus........grrr... what a disaster. I am a working pro photographer and have owned many different camera brands from middle format to 35mm to micro 4/3. Have  original brand lenses and third party. Some where better than others but I never have struggled so bad with autofocus inconsistent results as with this lens. It is a total hit and miss.

I purchased it with the USB dock. Tried all possible settings and combinations. Totally unreliable, when it nails focus the results are astonishing but many times it does not. As this is my working tool I cannot gamble if I got it right or not, so it will go back. As a manual lens it is still a good option, not for me as I need af for fast moving action sometimes.

I don't have any interesting alternatives in that range. Canon 3 af options are problematic. 1.8 ugly bokeh 1.4 (owned and sold) lack of sharpness wide open and the 1.2 also lack of sharpness and it seems also inconsistent with focus .

I might try the tamron 45 1.8 and see how it goes.

I expected a lot from this lens bad it didn't fulfill my expectation.
