Why all the standard apertures?

Why all the standard apertures?

Why all the manufacturers design the lenses with the same aperture these days? Is it easier to design, market, or what?

I mean, for example everyone, including the 3rd parties have a couple 70-200 f/2.8 and f/4. Why not a 70-200 f/3.3 or f/3.5 which is not as slow as the f/4 and not as heavy as the f/2.8. The reason I name 3rd parties is that they can make it in multiple mounts and in each group there might be users who may take something in the middle. Or not?
