RX10 IV - AF related EXIF data

I want to pull this discussion out of the original thread because it's getting to special.

I hope you all agree.

Let's start with David / Horacecoker:

that's worth for discussing i.e. testing and verifying:

How does AF work with 'AF-S + Center Lock-on AF'?

Does it use CD-AF only?

i just set the camera to AF-S and centre lock on AF........no dancing squares so no PDAF. ISTBC but it looks like that is CDAF.

I'm not the same David but I'll have to do (Horacecoker)

you (and others) should be right on this (see below).

Anyhow: Does 'No dancing squares' always mean 'no PD-AF' ?

You would have thought so judging by Sony's comment in the help guide but doing some tests last night I've found this is not the case.

There are some data in the EXIF regarding AF:

'Focal Plane AF Points Used' = 0 (=CD-AF used) = 1,2,..,n (= PD-AF used)

This seems to be true for all focus areas in AF-S as the exif always states 'Focal Plane AF points used' = 0 in AF-S every time. But in AF-C when using focus area Expand Flexible Spot you also get Focal Plane AF Points used = 0. This is nonsense because it is the focus area I use all the time except for BIF and I can actually see the PDAF points dancing!! It is also the best focus area to use full stop for me as it is the only one that passes my branch test.

If n is not 0 then you find:

'Focal Plane AF Point Area' = "x * y"

'Focal Plane AF Point Location 1' = "x,y"

'Focal Plane AF Point Location 2' = "x,y"

'Focal Plane AF Point Location n' = "x,y"

additionally there's

'Focus Location' = "x1,x2,x3,x4"

Yes to all the above.

'Focus Mode' = AF-S, AF-C, ...?

'Focus Area Mode' = Center, ....?

No, the focus mode doesn't appear in any exif data - that would be too simple for us wouldn't it?

My above mentioned shots using

'AF-S + Center Lock-on AF' have 'Focal Plane AF Points used' = 0

That seems to be true

i.e. PD-AF was not used! (as you said).

Also appears to be true

To sum up the exif data cannot be relied on it seems to be unquantifiable. As it stands it's claiming PDAF is not being used when it is in at least one focus area mode. Because of that it is seriously flawed.

David (aka Horacecoker).
