Overall Rating (G1X III)
10

Just inputting an entry for the G1X III into the user reviews to give it a metric as I've written heavily on it on the forums, but just need to slap one in.

Excellent for Pets/Kids; the camera is perfect for running around chasing things between it's small form factor and fast AF. Top notch.

Okay for action / sports; fast accurate AF and tracking, but zoom range is limiting compared to predecessors for sports usage (Consider a DMC-FZ1000 or RX10 III/IV)

Excellent for landscapes; large sensor, high MP count, wide sharp lens (for a point and shoot) and built in panorama. Also top marks here.

Okay for portraits; kit lens speed (f/5.6) on the long end makes it capable of portraits, but a prime lens offering such as the X100F or RX1 are going to be better options here as well as it's immediate predecessor (G1X II) or the competing LX100 both have faster optics.

Good for low light; f/2.8 on the wide end coupled with APS-C and 4-stops of IS make for excellent low light with static objects, and okay results for moving subjects indoors. The immediate predecessor, the G1X II, is also worth a look, as although the G1X III is good indoors/low light for static objects with it's 4-stops of IS and f/2.8, the G1X II really excels in low light with it's faster optic and 1.5" sensor that also has a longer reach meaning it can hit higher shutters or longer reach at a fast f-stop. The G1X III offers better AF though, alot better AF, then the G1X II on the other hand.

Good for flash photography; not much to write about here other then it has a leaf shutter for off camera bounce lighting.

Great for studio / still life; between it's 24MP sensor, decent, but not excellent macro distance, but particularly the two combined with sharp macro results, make this great.

Overall, I'd recommend for anyone looking for an EVF equipped camera that can go anywhere and do most things and wants the best you can buy in a point and shot. Not cheap.

4.5 stars for what it is. -.5 stars for the front dial having no resistance / feedback making it useless for anything other than MF adjustment and for poorly placed BBF setup. Consider the G7X II refurbished if you're looking for something pocket-able but (far) more affordable.
